He gives the somewhat typical performance as a punch drunk boxer and that gets a little irritating at times, but it's clear that he put everything he had into this role. It's not that the acting was over-the-top with drama or memorable characters--but it was some of the realest, most engaging acting I've seen. I think part of that can be attributed to a great script, with a level of subtlety you just don't see in sports movies. Southpaw's plot is by no means breaking any new ground in the world of boxing movies, however it is well done. The movie takes a sudden dark twist and your heart goes out to Hope as he copes with an angry daughter.
